Some of us, who have been around this business for a long time, will always believe this is a people business. Yet, as information speeds around the globe in unbelievably small increments of time, I fear I may be out of touch. While people are still the best part of this business, we are only as good as the connections we make with each other. Funny thing is I think that’s what Al Gore said about computers when he invented the Internet.

I’ve made many great friends in this business and I am amazed at all the smart, passionate people who choose insurance as a career. I know insurance doesn’t make you smarter. But I think that hanging out with smart people does, which, when I stop to think about it, is pretty smart.

Not too long ago I was on a company sponsored trip to Napa and had the extraordinary privilege to be in the same room with some amazing folks. Bill Walton, former NBA All-Star basketball player and current radio announcer, spoke to our small group of agency executives. It was so cool because he was just like another person in the room. I remember watching Bill play ball for UCLA when John Wooden (another amazing ‘regular’ guy) was coaching. And here he is right in front of me, talking about his enduring relationship with Coach Wooden.

On this same trip I met another all-star. Michael Green does have his own website, but you may not have heard of him. He was the wine consultant for Gourmet Magazine for 20 years and now works with hundreds of companies worldwide. Michael has done something I have only dreamed of – blended his love for food and drink with business consulting. He communicates a company’s mission through the appreciation of good food, wine and mixology. Michael spent the better part of the day with us as we toured several wineries in the Napa Valley. His message to me was spot on – food and drink are the ultimate connectors.

I could not have met two more different personalities in one weekend. What I learned from both Bill and Michael was that it is the people we meet and connect with that have the ability to make us better.

I want to invite you to build relationships with the people at Tuscano. I don’t care if it is old-school; Tuscano is a relationship organization, in a people business. We strive to use our relationships to underwrite, quote, and service our customers better than our competition.

I love this business and I appreciate the opportunities I’ve had to create and build relationships with so many of you. I am definitely better for it so thank you for using Tuscano for your brokerage needs.

Have a happy and safe Independence Day! Remember the Tuscano Agency is closing on July 3rd in observance of the holiday.
