Happy Valentine's Day! It's that time of the year when it is about as gray and dreary as it gets (here in Western PA). Thank goodness for a day that is pink and heart-shaped and full of expressions of love! Thank you, Hallmark and St. Valentine for a seriously brilliant marketing plan!

For the last couple of years Teri and I have gotten together with a few other couples for a sweetheart dinner party. Of course, I'll jump at any reason to get together with friends and share good food and drink! This year the conversation turned to the subject of our first vehicle.

Most of my friends didn't own a car until midway through college and most of them were clunkers. That made for some interesting stories - cars burning up on I-95 while on a road trip to visit their future wife, or a car that was a literal patchwork of Ford parts making it completely different than the Ford Fairlane it was registered as.

My first vehicle was a Honda 350 motorcycle. I drove that bike nine months out of the year and begged, borrowed or walked the other 3 months of the year. I loved that bike. It was predictable - if it wouldn't run I knew it was most likely the carburetor which was easy enough to pull off and clean. I took my first (of many) road trips with my dad on that bike. That first trip lasted three days as we rode around Lake Erie - a lifetime for a 16-year-old kid. I've owned eight motorcycles since that 350 Honda and traveled across the country with my dad over half a dozen times. I wish I still had that bike for no other reason than to remind me of the memories and just how far we've come.
