News & Views: You Should Write a Book

Newsletter – Friday, April 15, 2016

I love meeting customers! Someday I hope to meet all my faithful readers. I am always humbled when people tell me they love our newsletter. Every once in a while, someone will come up with a crazy comment like "You should write a book!" I am the last person on earth who aspires to write a book. Who wants to read about insurance, fact or fiction?

What brought this to mind is two people I am close to, who each recently commented about writing a book - one is a Personal Trainer and the other a seasoned Youth Minister.  What caught me off guard was that both seemed to think writing a book is the normal progression in a career. As though, if you do something well and for long enough, you might have the secret sauce to whatever that is. I read my fair share of books, even some without pictures! The problem I have is when I pick up a memoir or self-help book, my brain immediately goes into skeptic mode and I hear in my head,  "What makes you think you have something to say that is worth my time to read?" Which is why I am always amazed and appreciative of the nice comments I receive from all of you.

As for me, I think I'm more like Dave Barry than David McCullough. And, since there is only one Dave Barry, I'll keep my aspirations focused on leading the best wholesale insurance agency you deal with!

The first quarter of 2016 has been tough for writing business. Have you noticed the same? The market is definitely softening while at the same time some carriers are correcting rate deficiencies. Regardless, there is still plenty of E&S business out there and that is where Tuscano can serve you. Be it a new venture or something with tougher exposures, we would love to help. I can't say definitively whether we can compete on your standard market account that is facing a 50% increase in premium (though oddly enough we have at times). But when you do have an account that belongs in the specialty markets, call us! Insurance solutions R us!!

Have you heard that Pennsylvania is about to be the next state in the union to legalize medical marijuana? There are already thirty-three other states that have gone down this road. Even though the law has passed, many regulations about the industry are yet to be written. What's funny is that we already know the manufacturer/distributor must have insurance coverage to get their license to operate. That being said, if you have a client or potential client looking for coverage, you don't need to look any further.  Tuscano has a number of carriers that will consider these risks.  I'm neither for nor against the industry being legalized or regulated. The one thing I am sure of is that medical marijuana operations belong in the surplus lines market.  If a Philadelphia Insurance Company (who shall remain unnamed) comes out with a BOP product for medical marijuana I guess I will have to consider a new career (writing a book!).

You may never see a drug dispenser account, but I bet you see bars, taverns, and social clubs all the time! No one writes this business better than Tuscano. We can write bars that attract college students, clubs with entertainment, sports bars, or your local social club. We have many options to cover a wide spectrum of risk types and you can't find friendlier or more professional underwriters to help you. All lines of business related to the hospitality industry, including the liquor liability, are written by our Property and Package team. Give them a call!

Peace, Love, and Happy Tax Day!
