News & Views: Take That George Clooney!

Newsletter – Tuesday, January 16, 2018
I frequently get comments and positive feedback about this newsletter, which is cool, but leaves me wondering, “Is this all I’m good for?” In fact, I was with some friends, not even in insurance, over the weekend and they were commenting on the newsletter! All I can say is, “Take that George Clooney - you’ve got great hair but I write a darn good newsletter!”

It’s hard to comment about the news without ending up on the wrong side of someone’s politics, but I was struck by an editorial article in the Washington Post written by New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio. The city plans to divest $5 Billion in pension funds from approximately 190 companies that own fossil fuel reserves. Personally, I am a fan of putting your money where your mouth is. I’m especially fond of shopping local, supporting ethical business and steering clear of businesses that don’t share my values. It is, after all, my money and where I spend it matters.

On the other hand, NYC has also filed a lawsuit in federal court asserting that Big Oil is no different than Big Tobacco, having had a hand in recent devastating climate events. Given the profession I am in, however, I am no fan of lawsuits! Can’t we all just drive less and recycle more?

I hope you feel as I do: caring for the environment as well as the future well-being of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren is not a subject we can kick down the road. Believe me, I know – exercise can’t stop a heart attack already in the making! I look at this as Rob Tuscano really needs to do something about how many cars he has parked in his driveway (too many) and how many refrigerators he really needs (the wine cooler stays!). At the end of the day, it is up to me to get serious about changing my behavior that is damaging to the environment.

Since we are all invested in protecting Mother Earth, advising your exposed clients to carry Environmental Liability coverage is huge! As it turns out, Tuscano is here to help you with that! We’re able to write almost any contractor’s pollution liability (CPL) exposure; including those with obvious exposures (environmental contractors) and not-so-obvious ones (HVAC contractors and demolition contractors for examples). Also, consider the need to cover testing labs, environmental consultants, and engineers as well as a wide variety of exposures involving site pollution. We also care about saving trees so we’ll quote off any carrier’s application. Minimum premiums start around $2500 with limits available as high as are required by contract. Call one of our knowledgeable and helpful Casualty Team Underwriters and they’ll help you through the entire process.
