Several weeks ago, Rob wrote in the newsletter that one of the few tasks he still engages in is handling claims under our Lloyds contracts. He’s being modest; Rob brings a lot of value to this organization and there are not many days that go by that I don’t seek his counsel. Another of Rob’s duties is writing this newsletter, which is extremely popular. In fact, when I took over as President of Tuscano Agency in July of last year, it was with some trepidation. My #1 concern was how I could fill his shoes when the time came for me to author this newsletter. Well, don’t worry, Rob will be back from vacation in time to write the next one. In the meantime, I get a little practice before getting called up to the big show!
We talk a lot about purpose here at the Tuscano Agency. We believe that we’re here to do great things, not just to make money. There’s a parable that you may have heard of about the three bricklayers, and it goes like this:
A man came across three bricklayers and asked them what they were doing. The first replied, “I am making a living.” The second kept on working while he said, “I am doing the best job of bricklaying in the entire country.” The third looked up with a visionary gleam in his eye and said, “I am building a cathedral (or a museum in the secular version).”
Everyone that works at Tuscano is a museum builder. In fact, we sometimes refer to our employee profit-sharing plan as “The Museum Builders Fund.” In this story, the first bricklayer identifies as having a job, the second has a career, while the third bricklayer has a calling. The second bricklayer probably does an amazing job. He measures himself against the whole country and believes that he’s the best, and yet his vision is incomplete because it misses the fundamental interconnectedness of humankind, of societies, and of economies. He fails to see that there would be no bricks to lay if there were not a community building a museum.
Those fortunate enough to see their work as a calling as opposed to a job or a career believe that their work makes the world a better place, and they’re more satisfied with their vocation and their lives overall. All of us are looking for daily meaning as well as daily bread.
What are you building? My calling is to safeguard the legacy that my grandfather built, and that Rob and Jinny expanded over the past thirty-plus years. I do this to provide for and be a great role model to my children. I also work to ensure that this is the best place our team has ever worked because I care about them, but also because I know that the happier and more engaged our people are, the better they’ll treat you!
Speaking of building things, did you know that Tuscano writes contractors? We insure everything from small artisan contractors (with self-serve online quoting and rate comparison tools if you prefer) to larger, more complex brokerage accounts and everything in between. Learn more about writing contractor accounts in our upcoming CE class this month. So, the next time that museum builder (or any other kind of builder for that matter) walks through your door, give the team at Tuscano a shot and we promise you won’t be disappointed!
Thanks, as always, for your business.
Robin
