RLI Direct Bill Payments

Bulletin – Monday, January 28, 2013

RLI has changed the billing process on a small subset of policies - specifically for policyholders who do not return their questionnaire on time, leaving RLI inadequate time to bill them in many cases. In extreme cases, the questionnaire could be received AFTER the expiration date.

When the questionnaire is delayed, this will result in a nonrenewal notice going out to the insured, with the hope that they will quickly return the form and it can be reviewed for billing. In the past, we would allow those policyholders with "tardy questionnaires” the same number of days to pay a renewal bill as those who returned their questionnaire on time. However, this resulted in RLI providing ‘free’ coverage sometimes well into the policy term if the renewal questionnaire was returned very late in the current policy term—and then never paid.

RLI determined that once the policy has been nonrenewed for a valid reason with the necessary time required for notification in that state, then we do not have the same obligations to the insured. At the same time, RLI wants to renew as much eligible business as possible.

The RLI system has a ‘built in’ 10 day acceptance window. With the ability to pay with a credit card and the 10 day built in ‘window’, then an insured will have time to pay and retain their current effective date. RLI will accept payment until the expiration date of the policy.

Bills resulting from questionnaires returned on time remain the same.
